What are the most common characteristics of an alcoholic?

Home » Blog » What are the most common characteristics of an alcoholic?

A person’s personality can be one of the many factors influencing their likelihood of becoming addicted to alcohol. The phrase “characteristics of an alcoholic” is not what it seems. This phrase describes the personality characteristics indicative of someone who actively abuses alcohol. These are the emotional and behavioral traits that an alcoholic exhibits. These traits can often appear as changes in personality.

When someone displays these personality traits of alcoholics, they may struggle with alcoholism. You need to be aware of the changes that may occur so that you can assist your loved one. You can encourage your loved one to seek help if you know how their personality changes are linked to alcohol abuse.

Alcoholics have specific characteristics.

You may notice changes in the personality of someone you know if you suspect they abuse alcohol. You may see significant changes in their interactions with you or those around them. You can look out for these changes or traits in your loved one to determine if they are exhibiting the signs of alcoholism:

Prioritizing Alcohol

Alcoholism is often characterized by a tendency to prioritize alcohol. It is usually obvious when someone abuses alcohol. A person who develops physical alcohol dependence has no other choice than to continue drinking. They could experience uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms if they stopped drinking.

Your loved one may not want to go out if alcohol isn’t present. You may notice that your loved one will not attend an event without alcohol. They might prefer to drink at home instead. You can also go out to drink. They may also suggest that they change plans to include alcohol.

They may be eager to start drinking when you go out with them. They may also display signs of irritation if their alcohol access is delayed. Alcoholics will appear more relaxed once they can drink alcohol.

Placing the blame on others

It can be hard to accept responsibility for one’s actions. It takes emotional intelligence and maturity to take responsibility for your actions. In addition, it can be difficult to accept responsibility when drugs or alcohol are involved. Alcoholics are known to play the blame game.

Substance abuse often leads to problematic behaviors that put a person in defense mode. Some people may blame their bad behavior on the difficulties in their lives. Other times, an alcoholic may blame other people. For example, they may blame their housemates, partners, or family members for turning to alcohol or drugs to cope.

Making Excuses Frequently

Alcohol is a part of so many events in our lives today. Champagne toasts are often served at weddings, graduations, birthdays, and other special occasions. Brunch is rarely complete without bottomless mimosas. Grabbing a drink in a bar when meeting with friends or on a date is common. Alcoholics can use this as an excuse to drink.

Someone with the characteristics of an alcoholic has an excuse at hand to avoid being held accountable for excessive drinking. The alcoholic may blame excessive drinking on a stressful week at work or a rough patch in their relationship. Alcoholics usually have a good reason for drinking, whether to celebrate a special occasion or mourn a tragedy.

Drinking Uncontrollably

The inability to stop drinking is another clear sign of an alcoholic. The person will drink far beyond what they can control when out. This person will continue to drink alcohol in excess, even at social gatherings or public places. They will drink alcohol well beyond the point where they become drunk.

Constant drinking is a sign of a psychological and physical urge to drink. As the body becomes accustomed to drinking constantly, it needs alcohol to function correctly. Once a person becomes addicted to alcohol, it is tough to stop drinking.

Struggling financially

Financial problems can be an indication that someone has alcoholic characteristics. Financial instability is typical, but it may indicate that a substance abuse problem contributes to money issues. A person can struggle financially when dealing with Alcohol Addiction for several reasons.

Alcohol can be costly. Alcohol can be expensive. Alcohol is often more expensive in bars than in stores, so people who drink a lot at the bar may spend more than they can afford. It is particularly true of people who try to hide their alcoholism by drinking at bars. It is possible for an alcoholic who drinks at the bar to appear normal to hide their alcoholism.

A person’s work performance can also factor in their financial instability. Alcohol is physically and mentally addictive for some people. They can’t make it through the day without drinking. It can be a severe problem, as almost every workplace prohibits alcohol and drugs during work hours or at the office. Intoxication at work can be a serious issue that could lead to lost wages and/or being asked to quit.

Shifting Priorities

Another noticeable change is a shift in priorities. Alcoholics are known to abandon their priorities to drinking. Priorities like work, childcare, or romantic relationships are all put on the back burner when an alcoholic is more concerned with obtaining and drinking alcohol than anything else.

The individual’s grades could start to drop if they are a student. They may neglect their job if they are in a career. A person’s lack of attention to hygiene can also indicate that they aren’t focused on their well-being. It is particularly true if a person took pride in their appearance before they began drinking too much.

Unreasonable Behavior

Many people will engage in reckless behaviors when under the influence. A person who is addicted to alcohol may always be under the effects. Therefore, their irresponsible behavior may be a persistent issue.

Intoxicated people are more likely than not to get into physical fights with other people. Another severe problem is drinking and driving, especially for those who commute to work or have jobs that require them to drive all day. Intoxication can be a sign of alcoholism, as it is often the result of addiction.

At some point, most people behave recklessly. These incidents can occur whether or not there are substances present. If someone with a mild manner suddenly starts to show signs of alcoholism, this is cause for concern.

Other Alcoholic Traits

Different behaviors and symptoms characterize addiction or substance abuse problems. You may be able to tell if someone you know is addicted by the abovementioned characteristics. The alcoholic personality traits do not only include the qualities listed above. Alcohol abusers often display these signs.

  • Sensitive
  •  Insecure
  • Impulsive
  • Secretive
  • Defensive
  • Impatient
  • Manipulative
  • Easy to aggravate
  • Isolated and withdrawing

Other signs can include worsening depression or anxiety. Another sign is a worsening of depression or anxiety. Most people who use alcohol as a coping method do so to cope with the symptoms of mental illness. Alcohol consumption is a coping mechanism for many people with mental illness.

How to encourage an alcoholic to seek help

It can be hard to know how to help someone you love who has an alcohol problem. You might be concerned about their health and well-being if you’ve seen the effects of alcoholism on someone’s life. There are many ways to encourage an alcoholic person to seek treatment.

Learn as much as possible about alcoholism. You will be able to understand better the struggles of your loved ones and why they might not want to seek treatment. This will help you be more understanding and supportive when you discuss treatment with your loved one.

It’s important to encourage someone you care about to get help if you see the characteristics of alcoholism. Giving them the space to discuss their addiction, if it’s safe, can help them feel less alone. They may also be more inclined to seek treatment if you support them. However, you should not confront anyone if it feels unsafe. In such cases, a family or friend intervention may be needed.

  • First I’ll start by saying that, this facility is absolutely beautiful! A couple years ago my husband Tony attended Hathaway Recovery in Claremont Ca. While Tony was in residential he received every care needed for a successful recovery. Also, he was able to enjoy the home gym at the beautiful Hathaway home, it’s basketball court, pool and etc. which made his stay even more pleasant. I am forever grateful for the man Tony has become ever since his completion. He has two years clean under his belt and many more to come because of the amazing facility. Thanks again Hathaway Recovery and Staff, Keep Continuing Changing Lives, God Bless Diane and Tony

  • I came to Hathaway Recovery on court orders stemming from charges due to not taking medications for my mental health. I was fearful of what my future held and what that would look like. I have never been to a dual diagnosis treatment program before, and I didn’t know what to expect. I really didn’t think I had a substance abuse problem but after about 3-4 weeks of group therapy and the counselors here at this facility, I finally realized substance abuse influenced me to not be able to take care of my mental health. With the help of Hathaway Recovery’s team, I was able to build a strong foundation for my recovery that is vital to me and my family. The clinical staff, therapist, case managers, and counselors included, were honest, caring, and really helped me gain the knowledge I needed to build this recovery program and lifestyle. I am forever grateful for the treatment at Hathaway Recovery.

  • As a Trauma Informed Therapist I was contracted by Dina , the Owner to provide additional Trauma Informed Counseling. She indicated that she was seeking additional clinical services because her client population were enthusiastic about their recovery and she wanted to provide quality care. Working with Hathaway has been magical. This program does not separate addiction and mental health trauma into separate treatments, This program blends together the understanding that addicts have childhood trauma and have habitually used drugs or alcohol to dull their inner pain., Hathaway Recovery provides highly individual services for each client, including bilingual counseling. This is a program that I am proud to be a part of. Susan Pennington, LCSW – Trauma Informed Counseling Services.

  • Hathaway Recovery Center is the real deal. They helped me find myself when I was completely lost. After I lost the mother of my child due to a tragic accident. The therapists and counselors truly cared. We made a relationship with each other that was unbreakable. The other clients were awesome roommates and true to me. The house managers were great and the living situations were awesome. If I ever even think about slipping up I’ll be returning. Today I have over one year clean.
