Addiction Recovery: Understanding the Therapy

Home » Blog » Addiction Recovery: Understanding the Therapy

Therapy for substance abuse is an integral part of rehab. Patients seeking treatment can choose from a range of therapies. Many options are available depending on where you live, your money, and what specialized groups or focal points they belong to. However, most rehabs offer standard group therapy and family counseling therapies.

Future patients must consider the severity of their substance abuse and the available treatment options. A professional evaluation can help determine the best level of treatment for a person. It is also possible to decide whether they should go to outpatient rehab or inpatient rehab. Both offer different treatment options and therapies.

For example, outpatient patients receive on-site treatment and services and return home. Inpatient rehab clients can stay on-site 24 hours per day until their completion. Both types of patients can benefit from the available therapies.

What is Therapy for Addiction Treatment?

The individual receives education about their addiction, relapse, recovery, and how to cope with it. They also learn healthy communication and coping skills and how to create and sustain a recovery-support network.

The treatment can help you heal your shame and guilt and build trust and a positive self-image. It also allows patients to identify triggers and motives for their substance abuse. Finally, patients can understand why they should seek treatment in a supportive setting by identifying the root cause of their addiction. There are many therapy options, including:

  • Behavioral therapy: cognitive/dialogue behavioral therapy (CBT vs DBT)
  • Creativity-based therapy (art therapy and music therapy)
  • Physical (biofeedback, EMDR)
  • NAD Therapy
  • Experiential therapy (animal therapy, adventure therapy, art therapy, or music therapy).
  • Holistic therapy
  • Motivational enhancement therapy

Behavioral therapies are focused on helping patients identify and overcome negative behaviors. Treatment can increase motivation, self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-awareness. It also helps with communication, well-being, and purpose.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for addiction

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which teaches mindfulness, helps patients become more aware of the effects of their thoughts and actions. Learn how to be more aware of the quality and impact of your thoughts and how you can positively alter them. Therapy was first used in 1905. It has been used to treat anxiety, eating disorders, obsessive thoughts, behaviors, and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for Addiction

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which helps patients boost their self-esteem and provides validation, may also support group behavior. DBT can also combine elements of CBT and offer individual therapy. In some cases, it may even be used as motivational enhancement therapy.

Motivational interviewing

Motivational interviewing, also known as motivational enhancement therapy, is a method of helping people discover their inner drive to achieve a goal. It helps addicts overcome their addictive habits.

The licensed therapist listens carefully to the concerns and suggests ways to encourage them to make positive changes. This helps depressed patients regain their focus. Motivational interviewing can also be used with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to achieve better results.

Individual therapy for addiction treatment and family counseling

One-on-one counseling can help patients understand the root causes of their chemical dependency. In addition, counselors can help the patient to recognize and overcome factors such as trauma, bad friends, family members who encourage drug use, and low self-esteem.

Therapy can be used in family counseling. It helps the patient and their loved ones understand and overcome unhealthy relationships like codependency and enabling. It also helps them realize that addiction is a family disease. In addition, all parties can gain perspective and awareness by hearing about the effects of chemical dependence.

Experiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a hands-on, exciting way to alleviate trauma-based emotions. Adventure therapy often occurs in nature and can include other people receiving therapy. Many exciting activities include rock climbing, wilderness exploration, and rope courses. Rope courses are a great way to build trust and strengthen teamwork.

Experiential therapy can be described as music therapy and art therapy for addiction treatment. These therapies help patients release trauma and emotions in healthy ways. To heal, patients learn how to use their creativity to create.

Biofeedback and EMDR

Certain treatment types focus on measuring neurological activity, which could lead to mindfulness. For example, a facilitator might connect electrical sensors to someone’s skin and provide visual data showing patterns in the brain, breathing, muscle contractions, etc.

The facilitator can suggest better behavior patterns based on the patient’s vital signs. Addicts suffering from addiction should be able to make more informed decisions about their bodies and exercise greater control over their behavior. The patient can also learn relaxation techniques like guided imagery, meditation, and muscle relaxation.

EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) is a technique that works in eight phases. EMDR works by analyzing rapid eye movements while patients recall distressing memories and then removing the focus from memory.

This may reduce adverse emotional reactions. In addition, it reduces the patient’s cravings. It has many benefits, including improved memory and reduced cravings for addictive substances.

Support and group therapy

Support groups and traditional therapies have successfully created safe spaces that allow vulnerability. The 12 Steps, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, are a model for group therapy for addiction that foster relationships with others and provide validation and community through sharing others’ stories.

The 12 Steps encourage accountability and awareness by sharing wrongdoings, feelings of guilt, shame, and fears and making amends. They also celebrate milestones and celebrate success. Individuals can also learn to connect to a higher power of understanding and maintain a spiritual outlook. There is also online therapy for addiction (online support groups).

NAD Therapy

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD therapy, is a 10-day treatment to help cells convert energy into it. NAD, a chemical compound found in all living cells, helps to produce energy. The combination is intravenously administered in NAD therapy.

This is ideal for people suffering from addiction or side effects such as depression and anxiety. The intravenously administered drug is injected into the bloodstream and helps to reduce fatigue. In addition, it reduces withdrawal symptoms and helps curb cravings for drugs.

Animal and Equine Therapy

Some facilities may not offer therapies that involve dogs or other domesticated pets. For example, luxury facilities such as exotic animals may provide patients with on-site animal bonding. Equine treatment (horse therapy) allows patients to bond with horses.

A typical equine therapy session involves the patient, a horse, and a therapist. The therapist watches the patient interact with the horse. Horses can mirror human emotions, which allows patients to understand and reflect on their feelings.

Equine therapy can include caring for horses, such as feeding, bathing, and brushing. Patients can bond with powerful animals and feel accomplished and responsible. Some facilities offer therapy for dolphins. This teaches patients trust and openness.

People struggling with difficult emotions can enjoy being around animals that show unconditional love and encourage relaxation. In addition, petting animals can increase oxytocin levels, a stress-neutralizing chemical. And it can help reduce depression and symptoms associated with stress. Patients can also feel a sense of responsibility when caring for animals.

Holistic-Based Therapies

Holistic treatments include non-traditional alternatives that address the whole body and mind.

  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Massage
  • Acupuncture
  • Animal therapy
  • Music or art-based therapy

When combined with traditional medicine, integrative treatments can balance medication-related side effects. However, some people can still experience anxiety, depression, or cravings after detox and treatment. Meditation and yoga are good options to manage and reduce these negative emotions.

Meditation can help with anxiety and stress-related disorders such as depression. Yoga can increase endorphins and improve mood. Eating healthy foods and getting enough sleep can help stabilize your health.

  • First I’ll start by saying that, this facility is absolutely beautiful! A couple years ago my husband Tony attended Hathaway Recovery in Claremont Ca. While Tony was in residential he received every care needed for a successful recovery. Also, he was able to enjoy the home gym at the beautiful Hathaway home, it’s basketball court, pool and etc. which made his stay even more pleasant. I am forever grateful for the man Tony has become ever since his completion. He has two years clean under his belt and many more to come because of the amazing facility. • I came to Hathaway Recovery on court orders stemming from charges due to not taking medications for my mental health. I was fearful of what my future held and what that would look like. I have never been to a dual diagnosis treatment program before, and I didn’t know what to expect. I really didn’t think I had a substance abuse problem but after about 3-4 weeks of group therapy and the counselors here at this facility, I finally realized substance abuse influenced me to not be able to take care of my mental health. With the help of Hathaway Recovery’s team, I was able to build a strong foundation for my recovery that is vital to me and my family. The clinical staff, therapist, case managers, and counselors included, were honest, caring, and really helped me gain the knowledge I needed to build this recovery program and lifestyle. I am forever grateful for the treatment at Hathaway Recovery.

  • My brother has been addicted for years. All our family gave up on him. Recently, he completed an inpatient residential program at Hathaway Recovery. This place is blessed and so helpful. It’s very luxurious, you feel like you are on vacation at a beautiful resort. Hathaway Recovery staff is very helpful, understanding and supportive. They all helped him to recover and to become a human again and enjoy his life. This place also supports family members and teaches them how to deal with aftercare to prevent relapse. Hathaway Recovery is the place for those who are struggling with addiction. Thank you for everything!

  • As a Trauma Informed Therapist I was contracted by Dina , the Owner to provide additional Trauma Informed Counseling. She indicated that she was seeking additional clinical services because her client population were enthusiastic about their recovery and she wanted to provide quality care. Working with Hathaway has been magical. This program does not separate addiction and mental health trauma into separate treatments, This program blends together the understanding that addicts have childhood trauma and have habitually used drugs or alcohol to dull their inner pain., Hathaway Recovery provides highly individual services for each client, including bilingual counseling. This is a program that I am proud to be a part of. Susan Pennington, LCSW – Trauma Informed Counseling Services.

  • Hathaway Recovery Center is the real deal. They helped me find myself when I was completely lost. After I lost the mother of my child due to a tragic accident. The therapists and counselors truly cared. We made a relationship with each other that was unbreakable. The other clients were awesome roommates and true to me. The house managers were great and the living situations were awesome. If I ever even think about slipping up I’ll be returning. Today I have over one year clean.
